(PRWEB) August 24, 2005 -- Children with moderate to severe asthma could
breathe a little easier with 23 students from Pima Medical Institute, 1701 W.
72nd Ave. Suite 130 in Denver among the volunteers at Champ Camp, the Rocky
Mountain region’s residential summer camp for children with
asthma.
PMI partnered with the American Lung Association of
Colorado and provided RT students as counselors in each cabin group to assist
with medication, administration, asthma assessments, and ongoing asthma
education. In addition to the counselor role, two students served as
coordinators of the daily Discovery program, the community–supported asthma
education component of camp. The PMI respiratory program also sponsored a “Day
of Discovery” where they designed and implemented an asthma education activity
for the campers.
“The Respiratory Therapy program at PMI
incorporates an extensive community service component as part of their
curriculum to foster the level of professionalism and visibility that the field
warrants,” said Sue Anderson, campus director for the career college. “This
increased involvement in the community has proven beneficial to the students,
program and community.”
PMI recently received the
Health Educator Award from the American Lung Association of Colorado. The award
is given to organizations or individuals who have demonstrated techniques and
ability to impart health education information effecting behavioral change to
improve lung health in Colorado. Graduates of the 88 credit-hour Respiratory
Therapy program receive an Associate of Occupational Science degree.
The Denver campus also has programs for Dental
Assistant, Medical Assistant, Medical Administrative Assistant, Ophthalmic
Medical Technician, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, Physical
Therapist Assistant, Radiography Technician, Respiratory Therapy and Veterinary
Assistant.
PMI is one of the premier medical career colleges
in the western United States. The privately owned, accredited school provides
students with a well-rounded education embracing theoretical classroom studies,
as well as on-site training in allied health facilities within the community.
This gives the student the opportunity to function in a working
environment.
PMI has been serving
students since 1972, with campuses in: Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mesa and Tucson,
AZ; Chula Vista, CA, Seattle and Renton, WA; Las Vegas, NV; as well as Colorado
