Could the Next Great American Novel Have Been Overlooked

From Harper Collins, to Henry Holt, to Barnes and Noble, everyone is still looking for the next great literary novel. Sometimes that which you look for so intensely is right in plain sight. Did they forget about the debut novel of Whitfield Grant?

Denver, Colo. (PRWEB) August 23, 2005 -- In a recent article by Hillel Italie of the Associated Press (20 August 2005), it was stated that "As the fall season approaches, the book world is still searching for this year’s great American novel." From Harper Collins, to Henry Holt, to Barnes and Noble, everyone is still looking for the next great literary novel. Sometimes that which you look for so intensely is right in plain sight. Did they forget about the debut novel of Whitfield Grant?

"Railroaded!" was selected as a finalist by the Independent Publishers Association in the category of Mystery/Suspense/Thriller earlier this year. Recently, Railroaded was on the Essence Magazine August Bestseller list. Book clubs across the United States are starting to choose Railroaded as a must read based on recommendations of other clubs that have already enjoyed the experience.

Similarity to Current News
Coincidentally, the events of Railroaded are strikingly similar to stories in the current headlines regarding false accusations of sexual assault or rape. In view of the current headlines in the sports world and elsewhere, the novel showcases the almost mass destruction that can be levied upon individuals forced to endure such false accusations.

Research indicates that almost 40% of filed sexual assault charges are laced with falsified information, a statistic that is alarming and borders on a national tragedy in and of itself. Brought to mind are the recent accusations against Bill Cosby, Bill O’Reilly, Kobe Bryant, as well as other notable celebrities. In a July issue of Glamour Magazine, a story not listed in the table of contents but appearing on page 212 entitled "I Lied About Being Raped," tells of a women who made up rape charges and the havoc almost heaped on an unsuspecting man to cover for her deceit.

Maybe the subject matter is controversial, but with the Kobe Bryant, Bill O’Reilly, and Bill Cosby cases dealing with celebrity issues of sexual harassment, whether true or false, the subject matter is in the news almost continuously.

About Railroaded!
For the vast preponderance of readers, Mr. Grant has written an excellent piece of mainstream literature. Most intimate that, despite the fact that the victim and heroes are well-appointed, well-educated non-philandering African American men, the novel is actually a multi-cultural legal thriller, something which is sorely needed in the literature world. Most of the reviews on www.amazon.com are from top reviewers and readers alike which give the book very high marks. Two chapters of the Circle of Friends Book Clubs in metro Atlanta, GA had Mr. Grant appear at their meetings in June and the rave reviews from men and women alike were ever present. Most readers can’t wait for his next offering scheduled to be released in December of this year.

Whitfield Grant has come out of nowhere and produced a novel of excellent quality. Real readers will tell you that it is a great read . . . a great American novel which deals with real American issues. Look no further ladies and gentlemen . . . the next great American novel is already on bookstore shelves and quietly about to take America and the literary community by storm. Maybe the old adage is correct . . . sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees.
