V V Designs Comes to Aid of a Gang of Kids Trying to Go to Special Olympics
The Chain Gang in Minnesota has been working night and day to raise money to go to the Special Olympics this month. The big sale that would help them reach their monetary goal was cancelled at the last minute due to construction at the entrance to the retail store. Thanks to a San Diego based company, V V Designs, the gang now has a fully functional website with online store and they are very close to achieving their dreams.
(PRWEB) August 6, 2005 -- The Chain Gang, as they are now officially being
called, is a group of kids and young adults located in Maple Grove, Minnesota,
who are raising money to go to the Special Olympics. For the past 6 months they
have been working day and night to master the art of crochet and knitting.
All of the crafts created were to be sold outside of a big local retail
store on June 19, 2005. To the gang's dismay and huge disappointment, the store
cancelled the event (due to construction) the day before it was scheduled to
take place. By fluke of an email, the San Diego based company, V V Designs,
found out about the gang's predicament and stepped up to create a fully
functioning website with an online store to sell all of their
crafts.
It's truly an amazing story when looking at how The Chain Gang
came about. The founder, Pamela Reinert, took two of her special needs daughters
to shop for shawls for the prom last December. They could not find anything
within their price range, so Pamela decided to dust off her crochet hooks and
needles. It didn't take long before all 5 of her kids were begging to learn how
to crochet.
Within a few weeks, the kids were spreading the word to all
of their friends about their newly learned ability to crochet. Pamela recently
said "One day my daughter came home and said I have someone new for the group.
Oh mom, she wants to learn to crochet so badly that she is practicing with a
pair of those throw away chop sticks." Needless to say, no one is turned away
and the group is 30 gang members strong and growing every day!
As the
group continues to meet, they become so much more than a craft club. It is their
time for socialization. They now plan their sessions, set goals, someone is
assigned lunch, another is in charge of keeping a little journal, others work on
cards and thank you notes, or letters asking for donations for the projects.
They even laugh when a new person joins and warn: “Be prepared, Pamela says no
one gets out of work around here!”
As of today, The Chain Gang has
reached 50% of their monetary goal for the Special Olympics entrance fees. So
far all of the money has been raised through the online craft store that V V
Designs donated to them but other efforts are needed.
Despite being
crushed by the cancellation of the first retail store sale, the gang is holding
their heads high and making a second attempt at a different location in
September.
