White Squirrel to Point Town in New Directions
Custom crafted white squirrel weather vane to be installed atop Brevard, North Carolina's courthouse gazebo in honor of its upcoming 2nd Annual White Squirrel Festival.
Brevard, NC (PRWEB) April 27, 2005 -- No longer will residents of Brevard,
North Carolina have to provide guided tours to show out-of-town guests the
famous Brevard White Squirrel. They will now be able to simply point to the
metallic white squirrel weather vane scheduled to set atop its new perch on the
downtown courthouse gazebo.
The brass, hand sculpted weather vane is a
gift of Gallery on Main's owners Bill and Libby Lindsey. "We just love Brevard
and being in the heart of downtown Brevard - and I'm a squirrel nut" Libby
Lindsey confided. "I go through 50 lbs. of feed every couple of month, just
feeding the white squirrels."
Jimmy Harris, Brevard's Mayor, will have
the honors of lowering the white, particle paint coated brass squirrel sculpture
into place, using a bucket truck. "We are without a doubt, the Official White
Squirrel Capital of the America, if not the world." Harris explained. "This
white squirrel weather vane visibly displays the symbolic importance that this
'unicorn of the south' has played in the development of tourism, heritage and
history of the area." Last year, Harris proclaimed an official White Squirrel
Day in honor of the town's most famous residents.
Artie Wilson, County
Manager, will oversee the installation of the mystic creature, whose appearance
here is rumored to date back to the 1950's when a pair escaped from a circus
truck. The White Squirrel Festival itself is set for Memorial Day weekend, May
28th and 29th, and is slated with a free, two day concert and several streets of
arts & crafts vendors.
"We expect about 10,000 people this year",
states Heart of Brevard Executive Director Margaret Woodard. That's more than
the population of the entire town, but it's gotten that big." According to
Woodard, the talent for this year's event has also gone up a notch to include
national touring acts like Jupiter Coyote and Bone Pony. "With so much music,
crafts, white squirrel tours and family activities, we're encouraging folks to
book reservations early."
Meanwhile, there will be a new weatherman
keeping a watchful eye over the heart of downtown Brevard. According to Woodard,
"it's a bit nutty, and that's just fine with us."
