Huntington Beach, CA (PRWEB via PR Web
Direct) November 1, 2004 -- The American Indian Chamber of Commerce of
California (The Chamber) will be holding a media conference on Thursday,
November 4, 10:00 am at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles in order to
address the environment of “racism” against American Indian business people that
has been fueled by Governor Schwarzenegger’s remarks against American Indians in
California.
Since the Governor has started his “Anti-American Indian”
statements, Chamber representatives have received numerous racist comments and
actions against us as a minority people while attending meetings and events as
part of our efforts working on behalf of American Indian businesses. The Chamber
will discuss instances of the “new racism” against American Indians and the
dehumanization and unfair characterization of our people as an effect of the
Governor’s Anti-American Indian political rhetoric.
“We are NOT calling
the Governor a racist, however, we are compelled to address the “racist” effects
that his political rhetoric has had on American Indian business people - a long
misunderstood minority who are working towards the “ American dream” like any
other group,” said Chamber President Tracy Stanhoff, an enrolled member of the
Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and a Small Business Owner.
Leadership
from the Southern California Indian Center (the largest Community Based
Organization For Urban American Indians in the Country) will also be there to
speak on this subject and their experiences in obtaining grants and funding from
major philanthropic foundations.
The Chamber has invited, and is also
expecting leaders and members from California Tribes to attend in support of The
Chamber.
The Chamber, formally incorporated in 1995 as a non-profit, is
the only American Indian business association in California. The Chamber is and
operated by and for American Indian business people. Chapters are located in
Southern California, San Diego County and the Bay Area. Members of the Chamber
include American Indian business owners, Tribal Enterprises, major U.S.
corporations and Government entities.
