The “Case” of Pope PIUS XII

Eugenio Pacelli: Saint or "Hitler's Pope"?

(PRWEB) March 24, 2005 -- Sixty years ago, the horror of World War II, the Holocaust tragedy and Nazism finally came to an end. The echo of that pain and suffering is still alive today in generations of people with all kinds of ethnic backgrounds and beliefs.

Pope Pius XII was one of the protagonists of such difficult times. Saluted at first as a light of hope by both Jews and Christians, in the recent years he has been attacked and criticized, again a few weeks ago by the New York Times: was he a saint, a protector of life and humanity, or did he use that dramatic historical contest to fight Jews and Communists?

In the attached document, editors and interested people can learn about this controversial topic from Sister Margherita Marchione’s point of view. An historian of the highest caliber, Sister Marchione provides evidences and proofs about the “innocence” of Pius XII, especially countering the recent allegations about converted Jewish children reported by the New York Times. Popularly known as "the fighting nun," she is a member of the Religious Teachers Filippini and holds a Ph.D from Columbia University, was a Fulbright scholar, and author of more than 50 books. At least a dozen of them, in English and Italian, have been devoted to the life and work of Pope Pius XII during the Holocaust (including Pius XII: Architect for Peace [2000], and Pope Pius XII: Consensus and Controversy [2002]). Her first book on Pius, Yours is a Precious Witness (1997), was a groundbreaking oral history of Jewish and Catholic survivors of the German occupation of Rome, who paid tribute to Pius XII for his life-saving measures taken during the War.
