(PRWEB) May 17, 2005 -- MiniatureWargaming dot Com ( http://www.miniaturewargaming.com ) simultaneously reaches two
milestones this week: one thousand posts, and 500,000
hits.
MiniatureWargaming is a blog about the miniature wargaming hobby,
with links to, and posts about, free miniature wargaming resources: free rules,
terrain and painting tips, paper figures and terrain, reviews and more. With
more than 1,000 posts, it is the largest human-edited collection of links about
the miniature wargaming hobby.
Each of the 1,000 posts includes a link to
a useful miniature wargaming resource, and a brief description of the site. The
posts have been categorized and are fully searchable.
New posts are being
added on a daily basis. Webmasters and readers are encouraged to contact the
MiniatureWargaming editor with suggestions and tips.
In addition to the
main blog, the MiniatureWargaming site features a websites directory, to which
webmasters can add a listing for their miniatures related site; a section for
downloading miniatures related files, including free rules sets; a photo
gallery; a live feed from Ebay for miniatures related auctions; and the Bazaar,
in which manufacturers and retailers can announce new products and
sales.
The site has reached half a million hits in just over a year of
operation. The different sections of the site now are averaging more than 2,000
hits a day.
The miniature wargaming hobby is part of the "adventure
games" hobby, which includes role playing and board games.
Wargamers
recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game
of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being
the most popular. It's a hobby that's been around for a long time: the first
commercially available set of rules for playing battle games with miniatures was
"Little Wars", written by H.G. Wells (of "War of the Worlds" fame) in the early
1900s.
The most popular branch of the hobby focuses on fantasy and
science fiction games. But there also is a strong historical miniatures segment;
among these, Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and World War II probably are
the most popular periods. There also is a very strong group that focuses on
playing ancients, such as Romans or Greeks.
But there's more to the hobby
than just playing with miniatures. Hobbyists -- especially the historical gamers
-- spend countless hours researching historical periods and painting their tiny
soldiers in historically accurate uniforms. Others apply their research to
developing "realistic" miniatures rules set for playing battle games. Gamers
also spend their time building highly realistic scale battlefield terrain using
techniques borrowed from model railroaders and plastic modelers. The sculpting
and painting of figures has become a fine art form.
Some of the bigger
hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry
and Old Glory Miniatures.
