Weekly Reader and the National Association for Bilingual Education Form New Partnership
Educational Magazine sponsors “Being Bilingual” essay contest to create opportunities for students.
Stamford, CT (PRWEB via PR Web
Direct) August 23, 2005 -- Weekly Reader, a leader in educational magazine
publishing, and the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE), have
teamed up to create exciting educational opportunities for bilingual students.
This year, Weekly Reader will sponsor the 25th National Writing Contest for Bilingual students.
The
contest, which is part of Weekly Reader's year-long "What's Your Story?" program
of literacy activities, is open to all bilingual children grades 3 through 11.
It runs from August 1–October 28, 2005.
“This contest was created to
encourage bilingualism and biliteracy in English, Spanish and other languages
and to develop the skills students need to excel in school,” said NABE Executive
Director Jim Crawford. “Weekly Reader is an ideal education partner and we are
grateful for their support.”
Though Weekly Reader has a long history of
contests, this is the first time Weekly Reader has partnered with NABE for the
bilingual essay contest. Both NABE and Weekly Reader agree it is a perfect fit
and perfect timing as Weekly Reader publishes the first Spanish-English editions
of its magazines, for grades K-1 and 2-plus.
“Weekly Reader prides itself
on meeting the needs of children in today's world,” said Weekly Reader President
Emily Swenson. “As being bilingual becomes more and more prominent, Weekly
Reader is working harder to meet new education demands. The company is thrilled to be working with
NABE on this contest.”
Students are encouraged to write an essay on an
experience related to being bilingual. Some of the 2005 topics for the essay
contest include “Growing up bilingual,” “Why I want to be bilingual,” and “My
future bilingual career.” There will be one elementary school winner, one middle
school winner, and one high school winner, selected by a panel of 15 judges from
the Houston Independent School District. Each winner will receive a cash prize
and a free trip to Phoenix, AZ, for the NABE Conference Awards Luncheon in
January. For more information about the contest, log onto www.nabe.org for the guidelines and
an application.
