Project SEA presents Abierto 2005 – Our 2nd Annual Event Recognizing Autism Awareness Month
Project SEA will be hosting a benefit event Sunday April 17, 2005 at The House of Blues Hollywood, California. Performers and special guests will bring forth a night of awareness, joy and excitement for all who attend.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) April 15, 2005 -- Project SEA will host “Abierto
2005” Sunday April 17, 2005; a benefit event in support of Latino families in
Los Angeles and Orange County areas affected by Autism.
This will be
Project SEA’s 2nd event which targets the Latino Autism community from music,
dance, performers and style. Community leaders and performers will make this an
event to remember and all for a great cause. Live performance will be provided
by Tribäl, Common Sense and Skalavera. Community groups such as Autism Society
of America Los Angeles, Surfers Healing and Regional Center will be having
information regarding their services.
Project SEA’s provides this event
to thank all the parents, care takers, professionals, teachers, aides and
everyone else who help all those affected. This event is also to recognize
Autism Awareness Month.
Autism is now becoming the most common
developmental disability in California among children under the age of 10. With
the number of severe cases Autism being reported through the California
Department of Development Services (DDS) of thirteen per day, it is estimated
that Latino’s constitute over 40% of cases being reported. In a subsequent
report from DDS, Latino’s are the most underserved community pertaining to
services in comparison to other minority groups.
Abierto is Spanish for
“Open”; and that is the emphasis of this event. To open the doors of
understanding and bring forth awareness of a disability that is robbing our
children and their families. By opening the doors, we can better understand the
needs of our children and the dilemma’s their families encounter daily. Our
emphasis is a night of laughter and joy, but also, awareness and education for
all of those who attend.
Autism is at epidemic proportions. Twenty-five
years ago, autism was diagnosed in about 1:10,000 people. In the United States
the number of individuals with autism is about 1.5 million or 1:166 with the
number rapidly growing. Autism is an epidemic few can continue to
ignore.
