In the Sandbox, Fitting in Means Standing Out
For today’s tots, looking like every Apple, Coco and Milo just won’t do. One Little Monkey provides fashions in fun retro fabrics and kitschy accessories for unique kids and their parents.
Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) July 18, 2005 -- They lived through leg warmers the
first time around, fawned over grungy rockers, and never shied away from a
little (okay, a lot of) eyeliner. Where are they now? In the third row at your
local PTA meeting. That’s right, the Gen X and Yer’s are all grown up and
starting their own families. And if you think they’re going to play by the
long-established baby fashion rules, think again.
“Over the past twenty
or so years, it’s been all yellows, pinks, blues and cute fuzzy animals in kids’
fashions,” explains Donna Ferguson, owner of One Little Monkey, an online
boutique that sells vintage-inspired kid stuff. “I’m absolutely impressed with
today’s parents, though. They’re not taking the pastels and farm animals lying
down!”
Thanks to a boom in online and brick and mortar shops that are
catering to alternative kids’ fashions, they don’t have to. So, what will you
find at these shops? It depends, and that’s the beauty of it. At One Little
Monkey, you certainly won’t find sailor suits, but you will find sushi print
pants. You’ll also find yourself walking down memory lane. “We use a lot of
bold, mod prints that really echo the 60’s and 70’s, when a lot of today’s
parents were just kids themselves.” says Ferguson.
Like Ferguson, many
of these storeowners hand sew their unique wares. “I think parents really
appreciate that our stuff is not mass-manufactured.” Ferguson explains. Just as
she understands that her clients are drawn to the unique and handcrafted, she
also understands that they like choices, “I’m flexible. So, if there’s a fabric
you see in one of our blankets that you’d love as a dress, no problem.”
From their eccentric names to their extreme hairstyles, today’s parents
may be rejecting the notion of a common kid style and replacing it with
individual style, but don’t worry, there’s still a little ‘like father, like
son’ going on. Just look at Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker and tiny tot
Landon’s matching mohawks. Cute, but in a “spiky” rather than “fuzzy” sort of
way.
One Little Monkey provides alternative fashions and accessories for
today’s unique kids from 0 months to 6T. Founded by Donna Ferguson, a mother of
two, One Little Monkey provides a full range of “kid stuff,” including: dresses,
