Edmonton Councillor Wants World Expo in 2015
Edmonton Councillor Mike Nickel and groups of business people are examining the idea of applying for the 2015 World Expo in Edmonton, Alberta.
Edmonton, Alberta (PRWEB) May 6, 2005 -- Councillor Mike Nickel and groups of
business people are examining the idea of applying for the 2015 World Expo in
Edmonton, Alberta.
In this video interview, Councillor Nickel explains
the reasons for attracting this world class event. He also presents his
innovative ideas on the role and financial power of cities.
The first
global exhibition of the 21st century is currently taking place in Aichi, Japan,
from March to September 2005. More than 120 countries will be vying for the
attention of an estimated 15 million visitors.
When Japan started sending
out invitations for participation in EXPO2005, Canada was the first to
accept.
The reason is simple, says Louise Blais, counselor for
communications and culture at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo. “Canada believes
that world expos are important for countries to come together and have an open
dialogue,” she says. “We are committed at the highest level to making sure that
our participation is second to none. We want to make sure that what we bring to
Japan and offer visitors is an experience that will be memorable.” says Louise
Blais, from the Canadian Embassy.
The first World Expo took place in
London in 1851. The most recent global exhibitions have taken place as follows:
1970: Osaka, Japan; 1992: Seville, Spain; 1998: Lisbon, Portugal; 2000: Hanover,
Germany; 2005: Aichi, Japan; the next World Expo is due to take place in the
Chinese city of Shanghai in 2010.
Why attract World Expo in Edmonton?
World Expo will be a must-see destination attracting attendees from around the
world. There are many reasons to attract such an event: Increase Exposure to the
global Marketplace - This event represents a significant business opportunity
for companies wanting to reach out to the world and particularly to the tourism
market. In addition to retail exposure, each pavilion provides an attractive
venue for major business-to-business opportunities for establishing
relationships with visitors. Reinforce a Positive Canadian Image Abroad -- For
companies or Canadian government organizations, participation in EXPO 2015 will
provide valuable exposure as part of a truly international event—a positive
experience to reinforce the global commitment of your organization. Keep the
Momentum After Vancouver 2010 Olympics – Canada and participating organizations
have the opportunity to keep the momentum and world attention after the 2010
Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
With the attendance of governmental leaders
from more than 125 participating countries, as well as leading figures from the
United Nations and other global and regional organizations, EXPO 2015 will
provide an ideal venue for meeting the people who influence the global business
environment.
Mike Nickel's winning combination of university education
and business experience provides him with a strong background for his role as
City Councillor.
Prior to his election to Council in 2004, Mike worked at
Western MarbleCraft, his family's marble and granite business. He started the
company's successful artisan stone and tile works retail division and worked
diligently to expand the business.
Mike’s political involvement began
early as a political science student at the University of Alberta. In the
mid-to-late 1980s, Mike became active in student politics and held positions as
President of the U of A Students Union and Vice- President of the Graduate
Students Association.
Mike's commitment to his community benefits the
citizens of Edmonton. Among his accomplishments, Mike spearheaded the campaign
to develop the St. Patrick's Day Parade in 1998, and led the Capital Region LRT
Group from 1999 to 2001, as its members planned a 50-year vision for Light Rail
Transit in the region.
