Southern Spirituality Celebrated at the Morris
New exhibition shines light on rural church communities
Augusta, GA (PRWEB via PR Web
Direct) March 3, 2005 -- The Morris Museum of Art exhibits Lord, Remember
Me! Photographs by Stanley Lanzano, from March 19 through June 5, 2005. With
passion and candor, photographer Stanley Lanzano masterfully reveals aspects of
the Deep South and African American religious life that are often misunderstood
or overlooked. Critic Teri Tynes cites Lanzano for his ability to “break down
the traditionally difficult boundaries between artist and subject,” with his
direct and honest portrayal of a spirituality that is inherently connected to
the South. The present exhibition shines a light on rural church communities,
and it is as much a tribute to his talent as it is to the passion of his
subjects. The exhibition, organized by Morris Museum of Art curator Jay Williams
marks the first exhibition of Lanzano works in Georgia.
For more than
twelve years, Lanzano has followed the Reverend Floyd Knowlin, an itinerant
minister, to capture revival meetings, funerals, baptisms, and the everyday
lives of African Americans in rural South Carolina. Lanzano is so connected to
the flock, in fact, that this Yonkers-born, Yale-educated, family man, who
resides in Boulder, Colorado, is presumed to be African American himself by many
who encounter his work.
A self-taught photographer, Lanzano admires the
writing of Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Alice Walker, often
selecting passages from their work to display with his photographs.
The
Morris is hosting several events associated with the exhibition. The dates and
details of some of those events follow. For further information, artist or
